00:01:06
Our top story Malawi has appealed
for international aid for nearly
00:01:10
a million people affected by floods from
psych Loney die or thirty say people in
00:01:16
cycling affected areas are in dire need of
food water shelter and sanitation I make
00:01:22
my scene reports from Blantyre. Is
getting one hundred sixty two thousand
00:01:29
households in areas with the heat by cycles
it days of flooding. Official figures
00:01:35
show the cyclonic killed sixty eight people
injured more than six hundred and it
00:01:40
displaced hundreds of thousands of men at
00:01:43
a temporary accounts minister of
Homeland Security. Says they are in dire
00:01:50
need of food show and sanitation.
Is to tell the world that
00:01:57
he has to be from God. The natural
disaster that has differing us.
00:02:04
Feel. Money and image. To the world even
00:02:11
evolved to come. Despite
issues in the camps
00:02:18
allows department of disaster management
says their country needs about forty three
00:02:24
million dollars for cycle relief or
thought it is say they have secured
00:02:30
a half of that amount Catherine abodes is
00:02:33
a flooded displaced of. Our
District five. Hundred South
00:02:40
she says there are problems at the county
because of. They were initially given
00:02:45
a maze of flour in a cup of water boarded
she says boards and they were given
00:02:52
a plate of maize
00:02:53
a flower recent grey She says they have
been given to bases of maize flour but most
00:02:59
of the time says board they sleep without
eating anything flooded victim Wendy
00:03:07
says most of the assistance
they have received is
00:03:10
a from politicians running for
office in the upcoming May elections
00:03:15
a government and it woman was and
what he says when they come with
00:03:19
a bag of maize they tell us to eat
together in a group of this is not
00:03:24
a practical system. Because some of
us are for children who have five
00:03:31
children it is assumed it is
now in a minute area as in
00:03:34
a mouse is the bank providing
cycle relief aid is still
00:03:38
a problem because of the damage to
roads and bridges Mari accusatory is
00:03:44
a country coordinator for the United Nations
Development Program she says Air Force
00:03:49
have been made to help mylar we need to the
needs of the flood affected the people
00:03:53
here at the nations working in.
Implementing the plan. Our
00:04:00
already mobilized him from our century
marriage and Response Fund is based on your
00:04:05
three point two million. Dollars and
acknowledging that actually is not enough but
00:04:12
we will continue with the efforts to bring
my friends on site wanted I dissent from
00:04:18
was and be in
00:04:19
a mileage swamping entire villages with
heavy rains that flooded the parts of
00:04:23
southern Malawi and the Zimbabwe president
to be done with. Each degree had half of
00:04:30
the country's districts disaster
areas making my sea now for view
00:04:35
a news Blantyre in Mozambique hundreds of
thousands of people have been forced out
00:04:41
of their homes by cycle only die reporter
Mohammad Yousuf it in better and takes us
00:04:46
to
00:04:46
a new shelter for many of the storm
victims. We are in one of the nearly
00:04:53
temporary bill shelters in
the city of para there's
00:04:56
a commercial is filled with women and
children you can see people registering to
00:05:00
receive so alarms distributed by the United
Nations Refugee Agency units here most
00:05:05
of these people came from and don't do and
boozy districts there are cities hosting
00:05:11
more than one hundred fifty thousand
displaced people. With such
00:05:15
a population with little food and clean
water medical emergencies of course found
00:05:19
nine hundred fifty cholera cases aid
agencies say they're doing their best to
00:05:24
contain the busiest and stop cholera.
Sightly die hate Mozambique in mid
00:05:31
March the storm and the flooding has claimed
the lives of more than five hundred
00:05:36
people. According to the government
officials more than one point
00:05:43
eight million people in Mozambique
are affected. Safavian news
00:05:50
Bera Mozambique. Algeria has announced
00:05:57
that President abilities with
00:05:58
a flicker will resign before. His mandate
expires on April twenty eighth the
00:06:03
statement said the ailing leader would
take steps to ensure state institutions
00:06:07
continue to function during the transition
period the announcement yesterday was
00:06:13
received with some joy but there was
00:06:15
a little little euphoria as protesters
insisted the whole rolling system must
00:06:20
change under the constitution if the president
steps down the speaker of the upper
00:06:26
house of the parliament serves as interim
leader for up to ninety days during which
00:06:31
a presidential election must be organized
the eighty two year old daughter Flicka
00:06:37
has been in a wheelchair since suffering
00:06:39
a stroke in twenty thirteen protests
erupted when he announced he would seek
00:06:44
a fifth term but he later
backed down Marina Ottaway
00:06:49
a Middle East fellow at the Woodward
Wilson Center spoke to V.O.A.
00:06:53
Senior analyst Mohamed El should now be
about the complicated political crisis in
00:06:58
Algeria following that announcement. Well
we don't know if you three only what they
00:07:04
feel come who issued the statement that
nobody knows his personal role in this but
00:07:09
it's quite clear that this is an attempt
by the regime to maintain control over the
00:07:14
transition they are trying to make
sure that the transition does not the
00:07:20
lead to the coming to power of people close
to the protestors or at least people
00:07:26
who are not part of the present regime so
I think from the point of view of those
00:07:32
like change the idea that the transition
has to take place through the near future
00:07:40
it's ominous because it means that there
is in me still determined not to allow any
00:07:44
change to take place the announcement was
00:07:47
a deceive the world some joy however there
was little sign of euphoria of this that
00:07:53
has insisted that the whole ruling
system must change with such
00:07:58
a demand push the army to intervene and
that it be their Gyptian experience while
00:08:04
they fuse almost the possibility that the
problem with knowing what the military is
00:08:10
going to do no country is always very
difficult because the military is never
00:08:15
a transparent organization at the same
time the term solution takes place
00:08:22
within the all the institutions but it's
not going to be any transition I thought
00:08:27
there is going to be a new figurehead.
Flicker but there is not a call to be
00:08:33
a new type of government a
more open government so it's
00:08:37
a very difficult situation because you've
got the monastery to push through her
00:08:43
maybe to be intervention not opening that
went on of the army anyway they don't
00:08:48
push enough they'll find themselves with
the same regime mine with mine or with the
00:08:54
cars but under the Algerian Constitution
of the president as ignition is then that
00:08:59
of the speaker of. The
upper house of the G.M.
00:09:03
Parliament would act as interim leader
for up to ninety days during Grinch
00:09:08
a presidential election must be organized
What are the different scenarios that
00:09:13
could emerge in Algeria to me the
most optimistic scenario is one
00:09:20
that looks like the Tunisian
scenario where the formation of
00:09:25
a broad committee of thought to overthrow
the national convention of thought in
00:09:31
which not only people close to the
government but also be present at all other
00:09:37
organizations of the protesters but that
typically over the organized groups that
00:09:43
have started participating in the protest
for example the judges participated as
00:09:49
judges the law you have participated in
below your sense on what that the country
00:09:54
needs and take is a very broad
national dialogue but not
00:09:59
a national dialogue the way the government
wants it which would be appearing
00:10:03
restrict the dialogue strictly to arming
the Constitution but the two national
00:10:08
dialogue that might yet happen if
the demonstrations continue on
00:10:14
a massive scale it's an interesting
issue about how much. They are calling
00:10:21
this that really clearly manifested
the public opinion that they wanted
00:10:26
a broader process that had a lot of
unknowns I mean if I were to take
00:10:30
a bet Are you saying no more
fifty percent chance of such
00:10:34
a broad coalition perhaps less than the
but I think that there could be the best
00:10:39
case scenario for Algeria otherwise it's
going to be either a military takeover or
00:10:44
a return to the old regime with out of
the picture that was Marine Artillery
00:10:49
a Middle East fellow at the Woodward
Wilson Center speaking with you
00:10:53
a senior analyst a mom
00:10:54
a directionality. Sixteen
past the. How are you
00:11:01
listening to African news tonight on The
Voice of America Kenya. University is
00:11:07
making four years since I'm not sure about
00:11:09
a militant attack claimed one hundred forty
eight lives most of them students while
00:11:15
the Somali terrorist group has carried out
numerous assaults since then it remains
00:11:20
their deadliest attack inside Kenya
border reports from Nairobi.
00:11:29
Is a cup and but in twenty fifteen he
was studying to be a teacher at Gary's
00:11:34
a unique city when militants attacked or
Pierce's second that he heard what sounded
00:11:40
like gunshots and after some minutes
the sound of people screaming he's two
00:11:45
roommates ran outside to see what was
happening it was the last O.P.O.
00:11:50
So that my life happened they had people
outside and go to the voting for my
00:11:57
husband and I had. A little
00:12:04
yesterday. But maybe it was
like You forget my God that's
00:12:12
right getting. Up Carrasquillo one
hundred forty eight people again he said
00:12:19
almost all of them students the university
took nine months to reopen but now has
00:12:25
one thousand five hundred students more
than double the number twenty fifteen vice
00:12:30
chancellor. Say they have healed from
the tragedy we have moved on because of
00:12:36
resilience because of our. Marketing
strategist and because of
00:12:44
what we have done that has brought
00:12:46
a lot of students back.
Reversed we have put up
00:12:50
a brutal war and then we have also stopped
militia police post which housed thirty
00:12:57
officers after security increased
ascites of the previous attacks he's
00:13:02
a soft target this year one
generally fifty the attack on
00:13:06
a robust new city hotel in office complex
killed twenty one people but Kenyan
00:13:11
security forces responded quickly in
00:13:14
a given credit for keeping the death
toll down compared to previous attacks
00:13:19
political analysts and lecture I get there
will be some Kamau agreed used to see
00:13:25
the need to response or to so used to take
00:13:27
a bit long but I think if you remember what
happened recently and we see it even if
00:13:33
we lost lives I think the number of people
who are rescued and the way the whole
00:13:38
issue was one hundred in terms of communication
in terms of the time of response I
00:13:42
think the security forces have learnt
important lessons despite improved security
00:13:47
for survivors like appeal the threat of
us about attacks remains that reality for
00:13:52
which Kenya must always be
prepared right number for V.O.A.
00:13:56
News. The twenty fifth
00:14:03
anniversary of the Rwandan genocide
approaches on Sunday we are bringing us
00:14:07
a series of deeply moving profiles of men
women and children who survived that
00:14:13
terrible time they are talking about the
lives they lost their lives they have
00:14:17
found and their hope for
00:14:19
a new one better or Wanda today in the
survivors series let's hear from the you
00:14:26
then who was only twelve when he lost his
mother and two siblings in the genocide
00:14:31
he and others rescue kids were taken
to an orphanage but he left and became
00:14:37
a street kid in Kigali for several
months until he was taken to another are
00:14:42
phonetic which helped him study to become
a pharmacist while he says he's happy as
00:14:48
a thirty seven year old husband and father
of two he says most people don't know he
00:14:54
is furious but heights
it as best as he can.
00:15:03
I remember many things but one that I
cannot forget is the death of my two young
00:15:07
sisters I always think I'll see them again
someday I heard that they died but I
00:15:12
never saw their bodies people told me they
had been exempt from Musgrave's but I
00:15:18
never saw them pass me all those thing
that when I wake up one morning I'll meet
00:15:22
them of all things that happened during
the genocide this is what remains intense
00:15:28
in my heart. When I have
done your Whatever the
00:15:34
reason this memory remains fresh in my
mind is that shortly before genocide broke
00:15:39
out my seven year old and three and
00:15:41
a half years old sisters and I were
together. Would visited some people in
00:15:47
a sudden home I saved my life and left and.
ALL IS think they may have continued to
00:15:53
leave even after I left them unfortunately
for libel sources confirmed that they
00:15:59
were killed under their bogus Wag's zoomed
from Musgrave's so I always feel that
00:16:04
there's a mission
00:16:05
a failed to accomplish I was their elder
brother and I was supposed to look after
00:16:10
them even though I didn't have the ability
to save them my heart always throws that
00:16:14
guilt back to me. Who put the
word Where did I was twelve years
00:16:21
when genocide ended and I had nobody to
rely on no one to take care of me and I
00:16:27
found myself inside the often age which was
located in for Mongo Mark commune life
00:16:33
was tough there spent only one week in the
orphanage then colleagues of my age and
00:16:39
I decided to go to Kigali I knew
nobody there I normally crack
00:16:44
a joke and say I'm
00:16:46
a former street child in Kigali who now
owns his own house in the same Kigali. I
00:16:52
wondered into families but I ended up in
00:16:55
a religious orphanage that raised mantilla
finished my university studies. I own
00:17:01
a home and I'm
00:17:03
a father of two children.
Warded our first of all
00:17:10
forgiveness relieves the one who forgives
than it does to the one forgiven I
00:17:15
accepted what happened to us that our loved
ones were killed by other people we did
00:17:20
know all the people we knew our hearts are
clean we forgive them even though some
00:17:26
of them didn't ask for forgiveness. Others
don't even acknowledge their crimes we
00:17:32
forgive them in out of Harvard hearts
relieved and leave us more of life.
00:17:40
To which the rules are
very consult nation is
00:17:43

without any form of segregation whether
00:17:48

a country that all forsake opportunity to
all citizens without nepotism of ever it
00:17:57

be back home with the trophy I feel so
00:20:06

teaching profession shows that teachers
matter and therefore. That's the
00:20:32

in the community I want to be transformed
00:20:36
with this win to be as broad recognition

that's about integrating I said to me
00:22:26

make learning interesting in
00:22:30
a bid to make us relate to what they're
being taught in class and what happened
00:22:35

fine and they're looking forward
to this game all we hope for is
00:26:41
a win again though it won't be an easy
game since they have them advantage but
00:26:47
hopefully. Played them in the. Round
up and we defeated them by Tool one
00:26:55
and we hope it kind history can repeat
itself. Even when we're on our way in the.
00:27:03
Stands for the Council for instance in
tough position under suspicion of the
00:27:07
football playing missions in the East and
Central Africa there have been additional
00:27:11
training this much in the second ahead
of tomorrow's game. Straker put please
00:27:18
professional soccer for because I
get in Kazakhstan and squat in
00:27:21
a three one win I've been souping gents but
still not in your Champions League game
00:27:26
in September last year I'm going to score
articles on history and I want to do my
00:27:31
best why do you know what they're for my
country I'm one hundred percent. They have
00:27:38
us the best defender you Dan The K.S.C.
00:27:41
Who plays for stimulus State College in
Frida and Straker center and I went to me
00:27:45
who plays for socialist and Oklahoma State
at the professional players that hope to
00:27:50
help the team get
00:27:51
a point away from home but she says she
would be cautious when playing I guess they
00:27:56
took at what I'm going to predict so it
does Biscoe defensive but if things change
00:28:02
. To
00:28:05
a different things that amount of focusing
for the past and looking for what
00:28:11
a number of the dozen to means. With
This is grim news and it took on
00:28:17
a good team we have to go the two teams
meet again on Saturday this week and over
00:28:22
who play against Africa so I didn't
come in in the next round for this one
00:28:27
a side of sports I am a
gloomy divison look at it in
00:28:30
a compiler Uganda Thanks Much good may
sunny young and you're listening to the
00:28:36
sunny side of sports on the Voice of
America still with African football the
00:28:43
draw for the twenty nineteen Africa Cup
of Nations tournament will be held April
00:28:48
twelfth near Cairo Egypt according to
00:28:51
a statement from the Confederation of African
Football caf the draw for the twenty
00:28:56
four team Continental
showpiece will take place at
00:29:00
a historic place facing the Sphinx
and the Pyramids one of the teams
00:29:07
looking forward to the draw is the stars
of Tanzania who qualified for the Nations
00:29:13
Cup for the first time in. Thirty nine years
for reaction I heard my Cambodia reach
00:29:20
the technical director of the Tanzania
Football Federation and the. Excited
00:29:27
challenge for Canada only and I
know thank you let me suggest
00:29:31
a long long time that wasn't easy all
countries instead asked you because
00:29:36
everywhere on the streets in your C.C.
00:29:39
Everyone was so excited for us to forty
five percent sure. That we were you know
00:29:46
because he was coming you know. A minor
Kemo or two but we knew that we got
00:29:52
a chance to stand to make it and
we did it so that was the same
00:29:58
a very good thing in every community hands
and. Everywhere you go on the street now
00:30:04
people have called and i N.-G.'s
he saw all this he says it's
00:30:07
a good cook opportunity for your people for
all cities and entry there are so many
00:30:12
big move that have both want to try to play
in the Afghan climate base now they are
00:30:16
scared of those big moves that you are
likely going to meet as you know in four or
00:30:21
is eleven his eleven players I know all
the big names you can say that could
00:30:25
Nigeria make at least we can manage him
we can manage him because we understand
00:30:30
what it takes for us to be there and then
we just kind of come get us on the go but
00:30:35
I'm sure we all think all. The best from
00:30:38
a should get them where we are games making
as we go into the second I want to see
00:30:43
if I can just think that because we've
already fired all such OK maybe
00:30:47
a second time probably is and it can take
them down the OPI we're not going to be
00:30:52
a we going to be
00:30:53
a very strong advocate of how we sis try
to change climate and to make sure that
00:30:58
we're so I think the sense we've made in
our plan so be OK I think I will shock
00:31:03
a lot of people when they see the way we
play so become to ask them how soon to
00:31:08
start probably have quantum I mean we
trying to do it you know for me because
00:31:14
luckily. And also. Trying to.
00:31:22
Establish
00:31:23
a saucy. Because. I still.
00:31:31
Go to class well he said
that was. Possible.
00:31:40
That's And he knew the technical director
of the Tanzania Football Federation and
00:31:46
he spoke with Iron Mike and bone you by
telephone from Doris Salaam Tanzania I'm
00:31:52
Sonny young and you're listening to the
sunny side of sports on the Voice of
00:31:58
America meanwhile Iron
Mike and Bony also had
00:32:02
a chance to chat with the Khumbu five goon
the chairman of the Lagos State Chess
00:32:07
board Association to convo told Iron Mike
the recent victory of eight year old
00:32:14
Tenney to Lua at a wound me in a New
York State Chess competition was
00:32:19
a proud moment for Nigeria. Very
honest to feel young lawyer has
00:32:26
made a lot of those very very proud and
made every night drowned in. All this was
00:32:32
a very proud moment for all of
us on the course I think this is
00:32:36
a big you know many moment of walking so
do we have morals I do will meet the New
00:32:40
York just some people here you know I
believe would help all along the walls
00:32:45
although like we've said already today
we're just off to grade small where that's
00:32:49
once we do that will reap the reward I'm
going to give of just to meet people like
00:32:53
you know you won't find. These young
so far all taking the baton by the
00:33:00
Right now because without them would I
want to do this when this started all five
00:33:04
years ago we had it's schools in both books
today we have twenty two schools and I
00:33:09
cannot show you this time next year would
have to schools involved are due to. Who
00:33:16
says sawdust goes to is to create awareness
all over the state what's the response
00:33:21
been like it was
00:33:22
a pretty away and it was in the response
by schools the only ones putting him up to
00:33:27
go there when his has been great so it has
been very good and I can tell you that I
00:33:30
mean on the show that in the next six
months we would have another Tommy lead it
00:33:34
sponsored by the web or maybe by Chevron
on the web at work trying to make inroads
00:33:39
I would get to that but we're just not
there yet but I cannot show you the U.K.
00:33:43
Most just will probably tell you about
football than I do because it's
00:33:46
a beautiful young one to know which helps
at critical thinking the top step program
00:33:50
so he he does a lot of
things in schools the I.Q.
00:33:53
Goes on to not go into those always thinking
whatever you look at not just thinking
00:33:58
how can I do this one how could that be
chess train new how that is taking over
00:34:02
that's to. The chairman of the Lagos State
Chess board association and to combo
00:34:08
spoke with Iron Mike I'm boneyard in
Lagos Nigeria I'm Sonny young and you're
00:34:14
listening to the sunny side of
sports on the Voice of America.
00:34:39
Joining us once again on the show
as sports reporter. Sunnyside
00:34:44
a sports host Dan free Dell sporty Greetings
Dan sporty greeting Sunny it's good to
00:34:50
see you here in person instead of on the
phone or from some far flung remote
00:34:54
location nice to have you in the
studio dn we heard from gumi Davis
00:35:01
Rockaway engine Kampala at the top of
the show Magoo me was reporting on this
00:35:06
a limp dick women's soccer qualifying
match between Uganda and Ethiopia the
00:35:12
Olympics right around the corner in. In
Tokyo next year and that reminds me did you
00:35:19
I just got back from Japan talk
00:35:21
a little bit about your trip what did
you do in Japan Well sonny I had
00:35:24
a great experience in Japan
I got a chance to visit
00:35:28
a family friend who's staying there for
00:35:30
a few months so I was exposed to some of
the Japanese culture from an insider which
00:35:37
is quite a different experience
and you would get as
00:35:40
a tourist going around the country
so that was really exciting I spent
00:35:45
a number of days in Kyoto which is
this famous city in Japan for having
00:35:51
a lot of architectural sites that are
integral to the history of Japan
00:35:57
a lot of shrines and temples it's kind of
similar to what an American might think
00:36:03
of when they think of
Boston Massachusetts having
00:36:06
a lot of old buildings and old architecture.
Related to the foundation of the
00:36:11
country as we know it today versus
00:36:14
a city like Tokyo is the Commerce Center
I mean hundreds so I was able to be in
00:36:19
Tokyo as well and one of the things I
saw in Tokyo was the the blossoming new
00:36:25
Olympic stadium which is going to be
ready a few months from now almost
00:36:29
a year ahead of schedule now you say new
00:36:32
a lympics stadium and yet there's some
renovation involved talk about the also the
00:36:37
site which is in the
downtown part of Tokyo
00:36:40
a beautiful park setting with trees and
00:36:44
a temple nearby and it's walking distance
from some of the major kind of Commerce
00:36:50
hotel shopping areas of Tokyo was the site
of the one thousand nine hundred sixty
00:36:55
four Summer Olympics the stadium
continued to be used for
00:36:58
a number of decades after that and was
torn down in two thousand and fifteen when
00:37:03
Tokyo was aware that they were going to
be hosting the two thousand and twenty
00:37:07
Olympics and so now from scratch
00:37:09
a brand new stadium is being built and I
was able to walk around the stadium and
00:37:13
see how it looks I was also
sitting. In the stands at
00:37:16
a cold swallows professional baseball
game in March watching the game but also
00:37:23
seeing the stadium being built
in the background it was
00:37:26
a pretty cool experience did you get
00:37:27
a sense of how the Japanese are preparing
for the games did they seem well along in
00:37:34
their preparations Oh yeah absolutely I
mean I think one of the ideas for the
00:37:39
I.O.C. Offering the games to Tokyo
was that the city already has such
00:37:43
a great infrastructure they are used to
having tourists come to the city they have
00:37:49
a robust public transportation system the
city is pretty walkable the only coffee
00:37:56
out I would give anybody who is planning
to go to Tokyo is that Be aware walking on
00:38:00
the streets because there are
00:38:01
a lot of bicycles on the sidewalk so you
have to look for traffic and bicycle
00:38:07
traffic when you're walking around in Tokyo.
People are really excited about sports
00:38:12
there and one of the examples of how excited
and deep into sports culture people in
00:38:17
Japan are was that Ichiro Suzuki the
famous baseball player announced his
00:38:23
retirement from professional baseball he
started his career in Japan moved on to
00:38:28
the Seattle Mariners in the first part
of the two thousands went on to have an
00:38:32
incredible career in Major League Baseball
joined the Seattle Mariners during this
00:38:37
year during spring
training and kind of had
00:38:40
a couple of farewell games in the Tokyo
Dome in Japan and bade farewell to all of
00:38:46
his fans on his home soil and what was
technically game two of the major league
00:38:51
baseball season and the next morning that
was all anybody wanted to talk about you
00:38:57
know there was
00:38:57
a lots of international news politics news
in the United States and Europe and the
00:39:02
big story on all of the T.V.
00:39:03
Shows and all the newspapers
with each row retiring so it's
00:39:06
a very plugged in sports culture there in
Japan Sonny young and you're listening to
00:39:12
the sunny side of sports on the
voice of. Erica chatting with D.N.
00:39:17
Free Del Dan just got back from Japan which
will host the two thousand and twenty
00:39:22
Olympics and Dan I understand
you picked up some
00:39:25
a limp dick memorabilia so to speak well
you know there is there's not quite as
00:39:30
robust a souvenir situation
yet on the Olympics
00:39:35
a few little trinkets here and there but
I wanted to offer you Sunny something to
00:39:39
keep you energized not that you have
any trouble being energized but it's
00:39:43
a package of the Aquarius sports drink
which I'm sure is similar to some of our
00:39:48
listeners it has a good
dose of vitamin C. And B.
00:39:52
Vitamins to keep you going to mix it with
water and you'll be all set for your
00:39:56
endeavor is this the summer I feel more
energetic just looking at the package deal
00:40:02
yes I will try this I guess it's as you
said before the show it's a kin to gator
00:40:08
a that kind of a sports drink
00:40:10
a lecture law it's vitamins hydration keeps
you going and the and the hot weather
00:40:14
so save it maybe for
July. Willow we'll wait
00:40:19
a few months well then you mention it zero
The Japanese baseball star and the start
00:40:25
of the major league baseball season here
in Washington big game later Tuesday night
00:40:32
featuring basically was once the cornerstone
of the Washington Nationals franchise
00:40:39
Bryce Harper but he's returning in
00:40:42
a different uniform talk about
just down the street from V.O.A.
00:40:45
As Studios I'll be there working at the
game tonight Bryce Harper assigned
00:40:50
a big contract in the off season with the
Philadelphia Phillies whose home field is
00:40:56
just over one hundred miles
north of Washington D.C.
00:40:59
He's making
00:41:00
a return to Washington to face his old
teammates including fire balling right
00:41:05
handed pitcher Max Scherzer in the game
tonight the Phillies actually off to
00:41:09
a good start. Managed to sweep the Atlanta
Braves over the weekend in their own.
00:41:15
Series Bryce Harper hit
00:41:16
a four hundred sixty five foot home run
during one of the games. And it will be
00:41:21
interesting to see what kind of reaction
he gets from the local fans I think there
00:41:25
will hear
00:41:25
a few boos from the crowd when Bryce steps
up to the plate on Monday night tonight
00:41:32
Tuesday night Bryce Harper briefly was the
highest paid player not just had major
00:41:38
league baseball but in American sports and
then he was surpassed by Mike Trout of
00:41:45
the Los Angeles Angels What was your
reaction Dan to Trouts big contract Well
00:41:49
there's no doubt that Mike Trout is the
best player in baseball he's been at for
00:41:53
seven years or so he's not the most talked
about player because first of all he
00:41:57
plays for the kind of the second popular
team in Los Angeles and in the Anaheim Los
00:42:04
Angeles Angels of Anaheim and hasn't been
in the playoffs very often in his career
00:42:09
he's made amazing catches he hits
home runs he steals bases he's really
00:42:14
a great all around player and he's actually
up there in his first seven years of
00:42:19
his career with all of the greatest players
in baseball history as far as the stats
00:42:23
that he's put on the field so sounds like
he deserves it and he's been in great
00:42:27
shape he hasn't had many injuries I'm sure
he'll play well into his thirty's I'm
00:42:33
Sonny young and you're listening to the
sunny side of sports on the Voice of
00:42:37
America chatting with sports reporter
Dan free Del Dan I know were only
00:42:43
a few games into the new Major League
Baseball season what have been maybe some of
00:42:48
the highlights and surprises for you so for
well you know for example we were just
00:42:52
talking about the Seattle Mariners playing
00:42:54
a couple of games early in the year in Tokyo
and then coming back finishing spring
00:42:59
training and playing
again here in the U.S.
00:43:03
They actually have the most wins
in baseball because they played
00:43:05
a few extra games they actually played
seven games there six and one. If our
00:43:11
listeners remember last year was kind of
an epic World Series between the Boston
00:43:14
Red Sox. And the Los Angeles Dodgers the
Red Sox capped off an amazing season where
00:43:20
they had the most wins in baseball and kind
of flew through the playoffs defeating
00:43:24
some good teams in the playoffs winding up
winning the World Series the Red Sox are
00:43:29
kind of struggling their their their
one and for their in last place in the
00:43:35
American League East they've had some
pitching problems giving up six seven eight
00:43:39
nine runs
00:43:40
a game while on the other hand the Dodgers
are in first place in the national west
00:43:45
and on opening day I believe they sat or
tired major league record with the most
00:43:51
home runs on opening day in the history of
baseball moon and they actually have two
00:43:55
players so far have combined for seven
home runs in the first five games of the
00:44:01
season so the Dodgers look like they're in
good shape even though they played long
00:44:05
long season last year losing to the
Red Sox in the World Series and Dan I
00:44:08
understand you want to
give a shout out for
00:44:10
a Milwaukee Brewer Christian yellow
was the National League M.V.P.
00:44:15
He was you know an outstanding young player
with the Miami Marlins and was traded
00:44:20
to the Brewers two seasons ago
he was the national M.V.P.
00:44:23
Last year helped the Brewers get back
on top if you remember there was
00:44:29
a lot of up and down in the last week of
the season in the nationally Central where
00:44:35
the Chicago Cubs and the brewers were all
and the Cardinals were all trying to
00:44:40
figure out who was going to make the
playoffs and they had to be an extra game
00:44:44
a game one hundred sixty three in the
season the Brewers won up in the National
00:44:48
League Championship Series
losing to the Dodgers is off to
00:44:51
a great start again to make
it seem as if his M.V.P.
00:44:55
Season last year was not
an aberration there is
00:44:58
a major league baseball team based in
Minneapolis Minnesota the Minnesota Twins but
00:45:03
coming up this weekend Dan maybe the best
day of college basketball all year the
00:45:10
final four will be played in Minneapolis
Minnesota quick look. Get the match ups in
00:45:17
the U.S.
00:45:17
Men's college basketball championship
tournament top seeded Virginia will play
00:45:23
Auburn and that will be followed by
00:45:25
a game between Michigan State and Texas
Tech your thoughts on the final four dan
00:45:31
Well you know the interesting thing about
University of Virginia not too far away
00:45:35
here from Washington D.C.
00:45:37
Is one of the best teams in college
basketball the last few years that coach is
00:45:42
Tony Bennett's not to be confused with the
well known crooner Tony Bennett. One of
00:45:49
the best teams in the last few years but
really haven't fulfilled some of their
00:45:53
potential losing to Syracuse
00:45:55
a couple of years ago and stunningly
losing to University of Maryland Baltimore
00:46:01
County a tiny tiny school just
north of here in Washington D.C.
00:46:05
In the first round of the N.C.
00:46:06
Double
00:46:07
a tournament last year shocking everyone
who picked UVA to make it deep into the
00:46:12
tournament so finally they're paying off
on their potential and so I think you you
00:46:17
mentioned there was an A player
of African descent who made
00:46:20
a big play keeping UVA season alive in
their game last week and indeed let's give
00:46:25
a shout out a sunny side a sports
shout out for guineas Momma Dee Dee
00:46:30
a key day for the Cavaliers of Virginia
talk about the play he made Dan Yeah he was
00:46:34
able to keep play alive and then wind
up making the game tying shot in
00:46:41
regulation to send the game into overtime
against Purdue. UVA that University of
00:46:47
Virginia wound up winning in the extra
period but without him making that rebound
00:46:53
and making the game tying shot we're
talking about produce in the final for one
00:46:58
team that did not make the final four
perennial favorites Duke University the blue
00:47:04
devils of Duke led by Hall of Fame coach
Mike Schiff chef ski. They didn't quite
00:47:09
make it they lost in overtime dn But let's
give another shout out for Zion Williams
00:47:15
. Pretty much the consensus collegiate
player of the year your thoughts on Zion is
00:47:20
Zion Williamson really athletic strong
large player almost probably the same size
00:47:25
as Le Bron James Young Player leading the
Duke team actually people are expecting
00:47:32
four players from this Duke
team along with Williamson R.J.
00:47:35
Barrett cam redish Trey Jones to
be first round picks in the N.B.A.
00:47:39
Draft later this year probably the best
players this year in college basketball but
00:47:46
not the best team interesting so it's not
always talent that wins these games no
00:47:52
doubt about it I mean you
have Michigan State Tom Izzo
00:47:55
a coach that's been in the game for
twenty five years I won one championship
00:48:00
Michigan State was being routed on by Magic
Johnson the famous Michigan State grad
00:48:05
who really put college basketball on the
map back and I believe one thousand nine
00:48:08
hundred eighty in the final game with Larry
Bird and they're going up against Texas
00:48:13
Tech so you know four teams that are from
that are big schools who have plenty of
00:48:19
money but actually four
schools that don't have
00:48:21
a ton of history in the finals except
for Michigan State So if Tom Izzo and
00:48:27
Michigan State can get past Texas tack I
think everybody's going to be predicting
00:48:31
Michigan State wins
00:48:32
a championship this year and then you know
I love nicknames sports nicknames on the
00:48:36
sunny side of sports so let's give shout
outs for all final four teams the
00:48:40
Cavaliers of Virginia the tigers of burn
the Spartans of Michigan State and the Red
00:48:47
Raiders of Texas Tech I think Texas Tech
in Auburn first time in the Final Four
00:48:52
absolutely Auburn no one for football and
Charles Barkley Charles Barkley great
00:48:57
player it's all over it but really no one
for football will be interesting to see
00:49:02
if Barkley has something to say if Auburn
makes it into the final game Thanks Dan

00:04:53
temporary bill shelters in
the city of para there's
00:04:56
a commercial is filled with women and
children you can see people registering to
00:05:00

00:05:05
of these people came from and don't do and
boozy districts there are cities hosting
00:05:11
more than one hundred fifty thousand
displaced people. With such
00:05:15

Sightly die hate Mozambique in mid
00:05:31
March the storm and the flooding has claimed
the lives of more than five hundred
00:05:36
people. According to the government
officials more than one point
00:05:43
eight million people in Mozambique
are affected. Safavian news
00:05:50
Bera Mozambique. Algeria has announced
00:05:57
that President abilities with
00:05:58
a flicker will resign before. His mandate
expires on April twenty eighth the
00:06:03
statement said the ailing leader would
take steps to ensure state institutions
00:06:07
continue to function during the transition
period the announcement yesterday was
00:06:13
received with some joy but there was
00:06:15
a little little euphoria as protesters
insisted the whole rolling system must
00:06:20
change under the constitution if the president
steps down the speaker of the upper
00:06:26
house of the parliament serves as interim
leader for up to ninety days during which
00:06:31
a presidential election must be organized
the eighty two year old daughter Flicka
00:06:37
has been in a wheelchair since suffering
00:06:39
a stroke in twenty thirteen protests
erupted when he announced he would seek
00:06:44
a fifth term but he later
backed down Marina Ottaway
00:06:49
a Middle East fellow at the Woodward
Wilson Center spoke to V.O.A.
00:06:53
Senior analyst Mohamed El should now be
about the complicated political crisis in
00:06:58
Algeria following that announcement. Well
we don't know if you three only what they
00:07:04
feel come who issued the statement that
nobody knows his personal role in this but
00:07:09
it's quite clear that this is an attempt
by the regime to maintain control over the
00:07:14
transition they are trying to make
sure that the transition does not the
00:07:20
lead to the coming to power of people close
to the protestors or at least people
00:07:26
who are not part of the present regime so
I think from the point of view of those
00:07:32
like change the idea that the transition
has to take place through the near future
00:07:40
it's ominous because it means that there
is in me still determined not to allow any
00:07:44
change to take place the announcement was
00:07:47
a deceive the world some joy however there
was little sign of euphoria of this that
00:07:53
has insisted that the whole ruling
system must change with such
00:07:58
a demand push the army to intervene and
that it be their Gyptian experience while
00:08:04
they fuse almost the possibility that the
problem with knowing what the military is
00:08:10
going to do no country is always very
difficult because the military is never
00:08:15
a transparent organization at the same
time the term solution takes place
00:08:22
within the all the institutions but it's
not going to be any transition I thought
00:08:27
there is going to be a new figurehead.
Flicker but there is not a call to be
00:08:33
a new type of government a
more open government so it's
00:08:37
a very difficult situation because you've
got the monastery to push through her
00:08:43
maybe to be intervention not opening that
went on of the army anyway they don't
00:08:48
push enough they'll find themselves with
the same regime mine with mine or with the
00:08:54
cars but under the Algerian Constitution
of the president as ignition is then that
00:08:59
of the speaker of. The
upper house of the G.M.
00:09:03
Parliament would act as interim leader
for up to ninety days during Grinch
00:09:08
a presidential election must be organized
What are the different scenarios that
00:09:13
could emerge in Algeria to me the
most optimistic scenario is one
00:09:20
that looks like the Tunisian
scenario where the formation of
00:09:25
a broad committee of thought to overthrow
the national convention of thought in
00:09:31
which not only people close to the
government but also be present at all other
00:09:37
organizations of the protesters but that
typically over the organized groups that
00:09:43
have started participating in the protest
for example the judges participated as
00:09:49
judges the law you have participated in
below your sense on what that the country
00:09:54
needs and take is a very broad
national dialogue but not
00:09:59
a national dialogue the way the government
wants it which would be appearing
00:10:03
restrict the dialogue strictly to arming
the Constitution but the two national
00:10:08
dialogue that might yet happen if
the demonstrations continue on
00:10:14
a massive scale it's an interesting
issue about how much. They are calling
00:10:21
this that really clearly manifested
the public opinion that they wanted
00:10:26
a broader process that had a lot of
unknowns I mean if I were to take
00:10:30
a bet Are you saying no more
fifty percent chance of such
00:10:34
a broad coalition perhaps less than the
but I think that there could be the best
00:10:39
case scenario for Algeria otherwise it's
going to be either a military takeover or
00:10:44
a return to the old regime with out of
the picture that was Marine Artillery
00:10:49
a Middle East fellow at the Woodward
Wilson Center speaking with you
00:10:53

one thousand five hundred students more
than double the number twenty fifteen vice
00:12:30
chancellor. Say they have healed from
the tragedy we have moved on because of
00:12:36
resilience because of our. Marketing
strategist and because of
00:12:44
what we have done that has brought
00:12:46
a lot of students back.
Reversed we have put up
00:12:50
a brutal war and then we have also stopped
militia police post which housed thirty
00:12:57
officers after security increased
ascites of the previous attacks he's
00:13:02
a soft target this year one
generally fifty the attack on
00:13:06
a robust new city hotel in office complex
killed twenty one people but Kenyan
00:13:11
security forces responded quickly in
00:13:14
a given credit for keeping the death
toll down compared to previous attacks
00:13:19
political analysts and lecture I get there
will be some Kamau agreed used to see
00:13:25
the need to response or to so used to take
00:13:27
a bit long but I think if you remember what
happened recently and we see it even if
00:13:33
we lost lives I think the number of people
who are rescued and the way the whole
00:13:38
issue was one hundred in terms of communication
in terms of the time of response I
00:13:42
think the security forces have learnt
important lessons despite improved security
00:13:47
for survivors like appeal the threat of
us about attacks remains that reality for
00:13:52
which Kenya must always be
prepared right number for V.O.A.
00:13:56
News. The twenty fifth
00:14:03
anniversary of the Rwandan genocide
approaches on Sunday we are bringing us
00:14:07
a series of deeply moving profiles of men
women and children who survived that
00:14:13
terrible time they are talking about the
lives they lost their lives they have
00:14:17
found and their hope for
00:14:19
a new one better or Wanda today in the
survivors series let's hear from the you
00:14:26
then who was only twelve when he lost his
mother and two siblings in the genocide
00:14:31
he and others rescue kids were taken
to an orphanage but he left and became
00:14:37
a street kid in Kigali for several
months until he was taken to another are
00:14:42
phonetic which helped him study to become
a pharmacist while he says he's happy as
00:14:48
a thirty seven year old husband and father
of two he says most people don't know he
00:14:54
is furious but heights
it as best as he can.
00:15:03
I remember many things but one that I
cannot forget is the death of my two young
00:15:07
sisters I always think I'll see them again
someday I heard that they died but I
00:15:12
never saw their bodies people told me they
had been exempt from Musgrave's but I
00:15:18
never saw them pass me all those thing
that when I wake up one morning I'll meet
00:15:22
them of all things that happened during
the genocide this is what remains intense
00:15:28
in my heart. When I have
done your Whatever the
00:15:34
reason this memory remains fresh in my
mind is that shortly before genocide broke
00:15:39
out my seven year old and three and
00:15:41
a half years old sisters and I were
together. Would visited some people in
00:15:47
a sudden home I saved my life and left and.
ALL IS think they may have continued to
00:15:53
leave even after I left them unfortunately
for libel sources confirmed that they
00:15:59
were killed under their bogus Wag's zoomed
from Musgrave's so I always feel that
00:16:04
there's a mission
00:16:05
a failed to accomplish I was their elder
brother and I was supposed to look after
00:16:10
them even though I didn't have the ability
to save them my heart always throws that
00:16:14
guilt back to me. Who put the
word Where did I was twelve years
00:16:21
when genocide ended and I had nobody to
rely on no one to take care of me and I
00:16:27
found myself inside the often age which was
located in for Mongo Mark commune life
00:16:33
was tough there spent only one week in the
orphanage then colleagues of my age and
00:16:39
I decided to go to Kigali I knew
nobody there I normally crack
00:16:44
a joke and say I'm
00:16:46
a former street child in Kigali who now
owns his own house in the same Kigali. I
00:16:52
wondered into families but I ended up in
00:16:55
a religious orphanage that raised mantilla
finished my university studies. I own
00:17:01
a home and I'm
00:17:03
a father of two children.
Warded our first of all
00:17:10
forgiveness relieves the one who forgives
than it does to the one forgiven I
00:17:15
accepted what happened to us that our loved
ones were killed by other people we did
00:17:20
know all the people we knew our hearts are
clean we forgive them even though some
00:17:26
of them didn't ask for forgiveness. Others
don't even acknowledge their crimes we
00:17:32
forgive them in out of Harvard hearts
relieved and leave us more of life.
00:17:40

game since they have them advantage but
00:26:47

00:27:03
Stands for the Council for instance in
tough position under suspicion of the

football playing missions in the East and
Central Africa there have been additional
00:27:11
training this much in the second ahead
of tomorrow's game. Straker put please
00:27:18

country I'm one hundred percent. They have
00:27:38

00:27:41
Who plays for stimulus State College in
Frida and Straker center and I went to me
00:27:45
who plays for socialist and Oklahoma State
at the professional players that hope to
00:27:50
help the team get
00:27:51
a point away from home but she says she
would be cautious when playing I guess they
00:27:56
took at what I'm going to predict so it
does Biscoe defensive but if things change
00:28:02
. To
00:28:05
a different things that amount of focusing
for the past and looking for what
00:28:11

come in in the next round for this one
00:28:27
a side of sports I am a
gloomy divison look at it in
00:28:30
a compiler Uganda Thanks Much good may
sunny young and you're listening to the
00:28:36
sunny side of sports on the Voice of
America still with African football the
00:28:43
draw for the twenty nineteen Africa Cup
of Nations tournament will be held April
00:28:48

00:28:51
a statement from the Confederation of African
Football caf the draw for the twenty

00:29:00
a historic place facing the Sphinx
and the Pyramids one of the teams
00:29:07
looking forward to the draw is the stars
of Tanzania who qualified for the Nations
00:29:13
Cup for the first time in. Thirty nine years
for reaction I heard my Cambodia reach
00:29:20
the technical director of the Tanzania
Football Federation and the. Excited
00:29:27
challenge for Canada only and I
know thank you let me suggest
00:29:31
a long long time that wasn't easy all
countries instead asked you because
00:29:36
everywhere on the streets in your C.C.
00:29:39
Everyone was so excited for us to forty
five percent sure. That we were you know
00:29:46
because he was coming you know. A minor
Kemo or two but we knew that we got
00:29:52
a chance to stand to make it and
we did it so that was the same
00:29:58
a very good thing in every community hands
and. Everywhere you go on the street now
00:30:04
people have called and i N.-G.'s
he saw all this he says it's
00:30:07
a good cook opportunity for your people for
all cities and entry there are so many
00:30:12
big move that have both want to try to play
in the Afghan climate base now they are
00:30:16
scared of those big moves that you are
likely going to meet as you know in four or
00:30:21
is eleven his eleven players I know all
the big names you can say that could
00:30:25
Nigeria make at least we can manage him
we can manage him because we understand
00:30:30
what it takes for us to be there and then
we just kind of come get us on the go but
00:30:35
I'm sure we all think all. The best from
00:30:38
a should get them where we are games making
as we go into the second I want to see
00:30:43
if I can just think that because we've
already fired all such OK maybe
00:30:47
a second time probably is and it can take
them down the OPI we're not going to be
00:30:52
a we going to be
00:30:53
a very strong advocate of how we sis try
to change climate and to make sure that
00:30:58
we're so I think the sense we've made in
our plan so be OK I think I will shock
00:31:03
a lot of people when they see the way we
play so become to ask them how soon to
00:31:08
start probably have quantum I mean we
trying to do it you know for me because
00:31:14
luckily. And also. Trying to.
00:31:22
Establish
00:31:23
a saucy. Because. I still.
00:31:31
Go to class well he said
that was. Possible.
00:31:40
That's And he knew the technical director
of the Tanzania Football Federation and
00:31:46
he spoke with Iron Mike and bone you by
telephone from Doris Salaam Tanzania I'm
00:31:52
Sonny young and you're listening to the
sunny side of sports on the Voice of
00:31:58
America meanwhile Iron
Mike and Bony also had
00:32:02
a chance to chat with the Khumbu five goon
the chairman of the Lagos State Chess
00:32:07
board Association to convo told Iron Mike
the recent victory of eight year old
00:32:14
Tenney to Lua at a wound me in a New
York State Chess competition was
00:32:19
a proud moment for Nigeria. Very
honest to feel young lawyer has
00:32:26
made a lot of those very very proud and
made every night drowned in. All this was
00:32:32
a very proud moment for all of
us on the course I think this is
00:32:36
a big you know many moment of walking so
do we have morals I do will meet the New
00:32:40
York just some people here you know I
believe would help all along the walls
00:32:45
although like we've said already today
we're just off to grade small where that's
00:32:49
once we do that will reap the reward I'm
going to give of just to meet people like
00:32:53
you know you won't find. These young
so far all taking the baton by the
00:33:00
Right now because without them would I
want to do this when this started all five
00:33:04
years ago we had it's schools in both books
today we have twenty two schools and I
00:33:09
cannot show you this time next year would
have to schools involved are due to. Who
00:33:16
says sawdust goes to is to create awareness
all over the state what's the response
00:33:21
been like it was
00:33:22
a pretty away and it was in the response
by schools the only ones putting him up to
00:33:27
go there when his has been great so it has
been very good and I can tell you that I
00:33:30
mean on the show that in the next six
months we would have another Tommy lead it
00:33:34
sponsored by the web or maybe by Chevron
on the web at work trying to make inroads
00:33:39
I would get to that but we're just not
there yet but I cannot show you the U.K.
00:33:43
Most just will probably tell you about
football than I do because it's
00:33:46
a beautiful young one to know which helps
at critical thinking the top step program
00:33:50
so he he does a lot of
things in schools the I.Q.
00:33:53
Goes on to not go into those always thinking
whatever you look at not just thinking
00:33:58
how can I do this one how could that be
chess train new how that is taking over
00:34:02
that's to. The chairman of the Lagos State
Chess board association and to combo
00:34:08
spoke with Iron Mike I'm boneyard in
Lagos Nigeria I'm Sonny young and you're
00:34:14
listening to the sunny side of
sports on the Voice of America.
00:34:39
Joining us once again on the show
as sports reporter. Sunnyside
00:34:44
a sports host Dan free Dell sporty Greetings
Dan sporty greeting Sunny it's good to
00:34:50
see you here in person instead of on the
phone or from some far flung remote
00:34:54
location nice to have you in the
studio dn we heard from gumi Davis
00:35:01
Rockaway engine Kampala at the top of
the show Magoo me was reporting on this
00:35:06
a limp dick women's soccer qualifying
match between Uganda and Ethiopia the
00:35:12
Olympics right around the corner in. In
Tokyo next year and that reminds me did you
00:35:19
I just got back from Japan talk
00:35:21
a little bit about your trip what did
you do in Japan Well sonny I had
00:35:24
a great experience in Japan
I got a chance to visit
00:35:28
a family friend who's staying there for
00:35:30
a few months so I was exposed to some of
the Japanese culture from an insider which
00:35:37
is quite a different experience
and you would get as
00:35:40
a tourist going around the country
so that was really exciting I spent
00:35:45
a number of days in Kyoto which is
this famous city in Japan for having
00:35:51
a lot of architectural sites that are
integral to the history of Japan
00:35:57
a lot of shrines and temples it's kind of
similar to what an American might think
00:36:03
of when they think of
Boston Massachusetts having
00:36:06
a lot of old buildings and old architecture.
Related to the foundation of the
00:36:11
country as we know it today versus
00:36:14
a city like Tokyo is the Commerce Center
I mean hundreds so I was able to be in
00:36:19
Tokyo as well and one of the things I
saw in Tokyo was the the blossoming new
00:36:25
Olympic stadium which is going to be
ready a few months from now almost
00:36:29
a year ahead of schedule now you say new
00:36:32
a lympics stadium and yet there's some
renovation involved talk about the also the
00:36:37
site which is in the
downtown part of Tokyo
00:36:40
a beautiful park setting with trees and
00:36:44
a temple nearby and it's walking distance
from some of the major kind of Commerce
00:36:50
hotel shopping areas of Tokyo was the site
of the one thousand nine hundred sixty
00:36:55
four Summer Olympics the stadium
continued to be used for
00:36:58
a number of decades after that and was
torn down in two thousand and fifteen when
00:37:03
Tokyo was aware that they were going to
be hosting the two thousand and twenty
00:37:07
Olympics and so now from scratch
00:37:09
a brand new stadium is being built and I
was able to walk around the stadium and
00:37:13
see how it looks I was also
sitting. In the stands at
00:37:16
a cold swallows professional baseball
game in March watching the game but also
00:37:23
seeing the stadium being built
in the background it was
00:37:26
a pretty cool experience did you get
00:37:27
a sense of how the Japanese are preparing
for the games did they seem well along in
00:37:34
their preparations Oh yeah absolutely I
mean I think one of the ideas for the
00:37:39
I.O.C. Offering the games to Tokyo
was that the city already has such
00:37:43
a great infrastructure they are used to
having tourists come to the city they have
00:37:49
a robust public transportation system the
city is pretty walkable the only coffee
00:37:56
out I would give anybody who is planning
to go to Tokyo is that Be aware walking on
00:38:00
the streets because there are
00:38:01
a lot of bicycles on the sidewalk so you
have to look for traffic and bicycle
00:38:07
traffic when you're walking around in Tokyo.
People are really excited about sports
00:38:12
there and one of the examples of how excited
and deep into sports culture people in
00:38:17
Japan are was that Ichiro Suzuki the
famous baseball player announced his
00:38:23
retirement from professional baseball he
started his career in Japan moved on to
00:38:28
the Seattle Mariners in the first part
of the two thousands went on to have an
00:38:32
incredible career in Major League Baseball
joined the Seattle Mariners during this
00:38:37
year during spring
training and kind of had
00:38:40
a couple of farewell games in the Tokyo
Dome in Japan and bade farewell to all of
00:38:46
his fans on his home soil and what was
technically game two of the major league
00:38:51
baseball season and the next morning that
was all anybody wanted to talk about you
00:38:57
know there was
00:38:57
a lots of international news politics news
in the United States and Europe and the
00:39:02
big story on all of the T.V.
00:39:03
Shows and all the newspapers
with each row retiring so it's
00:39:06
a very plugged in sports culture there in
Japan Sonny young and you're listening to
00:39:12
the sunny side of sports on the
voice of. Erica chatting with D.N.
00:39:17
Free Del Dan just got back from Japan which
will host the two thousand and twenty
00:39:22
Olympics and Dan I understand
you picked up some
00:39:25
a limp dick memorabilia so to speak well
you know there is there's not quite as
00:39:30
robust a souvenir situation
yet on the Olympics
00:39:35
a few little trinkets here and there but
I wanted to offer you Sunny something to
00:39:39
keep you energized not that you have
any trouble being energized but it's
00:39:43
a package of the Aquarius sports drink
which I'm sure is similar to some of our
00:39:48
listeners it has a good
dose of vitamin C. And B.
00:39:52
Vitamins to keep you going to mix it with
water and you'll be all set for your
00:39:56
endeavor is this the summer I feel more
energetic just looking at the package deal
00:40:02
yes I will try this I guess it's as you
said before the show it's a kin to gator
00:40:08
a that kind of a sports drink
00:40:10
a lecture law it's vitamins hydration keeps
you going and the and the hot weather
00:40:14
so save it maybe for
July. Willow we'll wait
00:40:19
a few months well then you mention it zero
The Japanese baseball star and the start
00:40:25
of the major league baseball season here
in Washington big game later Tuesday night
00:40:32
featuring basically was once the cornerstone
of the Washington Nationals franchise
00:40:39
Bryce Harper but he's returning in
00:40:42
a different uniform talk about
just down the street from V.O.A.
00:40:45
As Studios I'll be there working at the
game tonight Bryce Harper assigned
00:40:50
a big contract in the off season with the
Philadelphia Phillies whose home field is
00:40:56
just over one hundred miles
north of Washington D.C.
00:40:59
He's making
00:41:00
a return to Washington to face his old
teammates including fire balling right
00:41:05
handed pitcher Max Scherzer in the game
tonight the Phillies actually off to
00:41:09
a good start. Managed to sweep the Atlanta
Braves over the weekend in their own.
00:41:15
Series Bryce Harper hit
00:41:16
a four hundred sixty five foot home run
during one of the games. And it will be
00:41:21
interesting to see what kind of reaction
he gets from the local fans I think there
00:41:25
will hear
00:41:25
a few boos from the crowd when Bryce steps
up to the plate on Monday night tonight
00:41:32
Tuesday night Bryce Harper briefly was the
highest paid player not just had major
00:41:38
league baseball but in American sports and
then he was surpassed by Mike Trout of
00:41:45
the Los Angeles Angels What was your
reaction Dan to Trouts big contract Well
00:41:49
there's no doubt that Mike Trout is the
best player in baseball he's been at for
00:41:53
seven years or so he's not the most talked
about player because first of all he
00:41:57
plays for the kind of the second popular
team in Los Angeles and in the Anaheim Los
00:42:04
Angeles Angels of Anaheim and hasn't been
in the playoffs very often in his career
00:42:09
he's made amazing catches he hits
home runs he steals bases he's really
00:42:14
a great all around player and he's actually
up there in his first seven years of
00:42:19
his career with all of the greatest players
in baseball history as far as the stats
00:42:23
that he's put on the field so sounds like
he deserves it and he's been in great
00:42:27
shape he hasn't had many injuries I'm sure
he'll play well into his thirty's I'm
00:42:33
Sonny young and you're listening to the
sunny side of sports on the Voice of
00:42:37
America chatting with sports reporter
Dan free Del Dan I know were only
00:42:43
a few games into the new Major League
Baseball season what have been maybe some of
00:42:48
the highlights and surprises for you so for
well you know for example we were just
00:42:52
talking about the Seattle Mariners playing
00:42:54
a couple of games early in the year in Tokyo
and then coming back finishing spring
00:42:59
training and playing
again here in the U.S.
00:43:03
They actually have the most wins
in baseball because they played
00:43:05
a few extra games they actually played
seven games there six and one. If our
00:43:11
listeners remember last year was kind of
an epic World Series between the Boston
00:43:14
Red Sox. And the Los Angeles Dodgers the
Red Sox capped off an amazing season where
00:43:20
they had the most wins in baseball and kind
of flew through the playoffs defeating
00:43:24
some good teams in the playoffs winding up
winning the World Series the Red Sox are
00:43:29
kind of struggling their their their
one and for their in last place in the
00:43:35
American League East they've had some
pitching problems giving up six seven eight
00:43:39
nine runs
00:43:40
a game while on the other hand the Dodgers
are in first place in the national west
00:43:45
and on opening day I believe they sat or
tired major league record with the most
00:43:51
home runs on opening day in the history of
baseball moon and they actually have two
00:43:55
players so far have combined for seven
home runs in the first five games of the
00:44:01
season so the Dodgers look like they're in
good shape even though they played long
00:44:05
long season last year losing to the
Red Sox in the World Series and Dan I
00:44:08
understand you want to
give a shout out for
00:44:10
a Milwaukee Brewer Christian yellow
was the National League M.V.P.
00:44:15
He was you know an outstanding young player
with the Miami Marlins and was traded
00:44:20
to the Brewers two seasons ago
he was the national M.V.P.
00:44:23
Last year helped the Brewers get back
on top if you remember there was
00:44:29
a lot of up and down in the last week of
the season in the nationally Central where
00:44:35
the Chicago Cubs and the brewers were all
and the Cardinals were all trying to
00:44:40
figure out who was going to make the
playoffs and they had to be an extra game
00:44:44
a game one hundred sixty three in the
season the Brewers won up in the National
00:44:48
League Championship Series
losing to the Dodgers is off to
00:44:51
a great start again to make
it seem as if his M.V.P.
00:44:55
Season last year was not
an aberration there is
00:44:58
a major league baseball team based in
Minneapolis Minnesota the Minnesota Twins but
00:45:03
coming up this weekend Dan maybe the best
day of college basketball all year the
00:45:10
final four will be played in Minneapolis
Minnesota quick look. Get the match ups in
00:45:17
the U.S.
00:45:17
Men's college basketball championship
tournament top seeded Virginia will play
00:45:23
Auburn and that will be followed by
00:45:25
a game between Michigan State and Texas
Tech your thoughts on the final four dan
00:45:31
Well you know the interesting thing about
University of Virginia not too far away
00:45:35
here from Washington D.C.
00:45:37
Is one of the best teams in college
basketball the last few years that coach is
00:45:42
Tony Bennett's not to be confused with the
well known crooner Tony Bennett. One of
00:45:49
the best teams in the last few years but
really haven't fulfilled some of their
00:45:53
potential losing to Syracuse
00:45:55
a couple of years ago and stunningly
losing to University of Maryland Baltimore
00:46:01
County a tiny tiny school just
north of here in Washington D.C.
00:46:05
In the first round of the N.C.
00:46:06
Double
00:46:07
a tournament last year shocking everyone
who picked UVA to make it deep into the
00:46:12
tournament so finally they're paying off
on their potential and so I think you you
00:46:17
mentioned there was an A player
of African descent who made
00:46:20
a big play keeping UVA season alive in
their game last week and indeed let's give
00:46:25
a shout out a sunny side a sports
shout out for guineas Momma Dee Dee
00:46:30
a key day for the Cavaliers of Virginia
talk about the play he made Dan Yeah he was
00:46:34
able to keep play alive and then wind
up making the game tying shot in
00:46:41
regulation to send the game into overtime
against Purdue. UVA that University of
00:46:47
Virginia wound up winning in the extra
period but without him making that rebound
00:46:53
and making the game tying shot we're
talking about produce in the final for one
00:46:58
team that did not make the final four
perennial favorites Duke University the blue
00:47:04
devils of Duke led by Hall of Fame coach
Mike Schiff chef ski. They didn't quite
00:47:09
make it they lost in overtime dn But let's
give another shout out for Zion Williams
00:47:15
. Pretty much the consensus collegiate
player of the year your thoughts on Zion is
00:47:20
Zion Williamson really athletic strong
large player almost probably the same size
00:47:25
as Le Bron James Young Player leading the
Duke team actually people are expecting
00:47:32
four players from this Duke
team along with Williamson R.J.
00:47:35
Barrett cam redish Trey Jones to
be first round picks in the N.B.A.
00:47:39
Draft later this year probably the best
players this year in college basketball but
00:47:46
not the best team interesting so it's not
always talent that wins these games no
00:47:52
doubt about it I mean you
have Michigan State Tom Izzo
00:47:55
a coach that's been in the game for
twenty five years I won one championship
00:48:00
Michigan State was being routed on by Magic
Johnson the famous Michigan State grad
00:48:05
who really put college basketball on the
map back and I believe one thousand nine
00:48:08
hundred eighty in the final game with Larry
Bird and they're going up against Texas
00:48:13
Tech so you know four teams that are from
that are big schools who have plenty of
00:48:19
money but actually four
schools that don't have
00:48:21
a ton of history in the finals except
for Michigan State So if Tom Izzo and
00:48:27
Michigan State can get past Texas tack I
think everybody's going to be predicting
00:48:31
Michigan State wins
00:48:32
a championship this year and then you know
I love nicknames sports nicknames on the
00:48:36
sunny side of sports so let's give shout
outs for all final four teams the
00:48:40
Cavaliers of Virginia the tigers of burn
the Spartans of Michigan State and the Red
00:48:47
Raiders of Texas Tech I think Texas Tech
in Auburn first time in the Final Four
00:48:52
absolutely Auburn no one for football and
Charles Barkley Charles Barkley great
00:48:57
player it's all over it but really no one
for football will be interesting to see
00:49:02
if Barkley has something to say if Auburn
makes it into the final game Thanks Dan
00:49:07
sports reporter Dan Freeh Dela will have
